WWII “Ithaca/Remington Rand” M1911a1 .45
ACP Semi-Auto Pistol:
Pictured is a WWII-manufactured Model
1911a1 in .45 ACP caliber that represents a postwar Rock Island Arsenal rebuild with Ithaca slide
on a Remington Rand frame for military reissue.
Between 1942 and 1945, Ithaca Gun Company
of New York made 382,000 of the .45-caliber Model 1911a1 pistols for the U.S. military.
Remington Rand was awarded its first order on
March 16, 1942, for a total of 125,000 1911a1
semi-auto pistols. Remington Rand formed a new
division, Remington Rand “C” Division, to manufacture pistols. Remington Rand “C” Division
reconfigured a vacant plant into a modern pistolmanufacturing facility. The plant was located
in Syracuse, NY, and was once used for building typewriters. As Remington Rand built more
1911a1 pistols than any other military contractor,
plus the fact that the quality was considered superior to most, it is not uncommon to find many
Remington Rand receivers as the foundation to
the National Match pistols used at the Camp Perry
National Matches.
