Lubbock, Texas, named a park in his
honor.”
Clearly, Wallace, who wrote of
Mackenzie in the 1960s, thought the
general deserved more than a few
lazy lines in the New York Times.
Closer to home, it was
Mackenzie who commanded nearby
Fort Richardson when in 1871 Gen.
William Tecumseh Sherman made his
inspection of the Texas frontier from
San Antonio to Jacksboro. Sherman
doubted stories of Indian atrocities
in Texas and determined to lay the
issue to rest by traveling the length of
