So we left, thinking he’s going to be put down within the next 24 hours.” Other on-line comments criticized the Harris family for leaving their dog to be buried “by a stranger.” The problem with that reasoning was that Dr. Tierce was no stranger to the Harris family. “We trusted Dr. Tierce,” Jamie Harris said. “He had been our vet for 25 years.” Marian discussed Sid’s final resting place with her children. “We had discussed that he was going to be buried at their [Dr. and Mrs. Tierce’s] ranch in Millsap,” Marian said. “Because the vet had done that with several of our other animals. That’s what we were led to believe, that he would take them out to his ranch and bury them. My son had said, ‘I just don’t want him to be cremated because I feel like he ceases to exist if he is cremated; but if he is buried, he somehow still exists here somewhere.’ And that was a discussion I had had with my vet’s wife, who is the office manager. As we had talked about, if it was possible, he didn’t want him to be cremated; he wanted him to be buried at the ranch.” It all sounded so serene, almost idyllic. What dog, or human, for that matter, wouldn’t want to be laid to rest on a beautiful ranch? “He had put other animals down for us,” Jamie Harris said. “We have pictures of Case sobbing, saying goodbye to Sid. And they [Dr. and Mrs. Tierce] were there when all of that was going on, when they saw our child and Marian sobbing over Sid.” Dr. Tierce had reportedly made the statement following his arrest and release that, “That lady wanted me to put her dog down, but I just couldn’t do it.” Jamie’s answer to that comment was simple. “I was very clear that even though the timing was rough, I wanted to put him down because Continued on page 92
