who goes to this vet, he teaches them
how to express their [dog’s] anal
glands. He teaches you how to do a
lot of this stuff at home. We did all
that stuff over the years. There was
just th is issue that we couldn’t get
under control.
“The plan was he was going to
surgically remove this problem. But
instead he said, ’Let us try this treatment and protocol.’ And so Jamie
had that discussion with him and we
agreed. It’s basic, but it will be slower than normal surgical procedure.
“They had him there for four
months working on this procedure
and during that time we would pop
in and check on him. And during
one of those visits, when Jamie went
to go see him, he couldn’t walk. He
couldn’t pick up his hind quarters.
They were kind of hesitant to bring
him out and they said, ‘Well, he’s
kind of having trouble walking,’
and when we asked the vet why, he
attributed it to the meds he was on –
that something in the meds was dropping his blood pressure somehow,
which we were kind of like, ‘I don’t
understand how meds can do that.’
But you know, we trusted him.
“And then I went in there a
couple of weeks later as they were
working on the med situation. I went
to get medicine for his dad, and his
dad was having some back issues,
and he was using Sid to calibrate
x-rays, so we would have a minimal
amount of time working with my
other dog, because my other dog
didn’t like being there. And in the
middle of the calibrating, he found
a birth defect on his spine. He said
it was degenerative and irretrievable
because it was a birth defect and he
was in pain and he couldn’t walk at
that time.
“And so he went through this
explanation of everything that was
wrong, his conclusions he was drawing toward. I responded, ‘So you’re
telling me I should put him down?’
and he said, ‘Yeah.’ And so at that
time there was a lot going on and I
had said ‘This is just bad timing,’ and
he said, ‘Well, I can keep him alive
for two more weeks if that would
help,’ and I said, ‘No, not if he’s in
pain, we don’t want him to be in
pain.’ And so I said, ‘let me bring
