nizing Sid on Wednesday at her vet’s
recommendation, one of her dearest
friends had died, and her sister-in-law
died on Saturday.
There have been comments from
people who didn’t know the Harris
family that said, “Well, you just left
him there and abandoned him for a
wedding.”
Marian’s reply puts the whole
situation into a different perspective.
“We were preparing a wedding,”
she said. “But it was a wedding for
my niece who had tried to move the
wedding up so her mother could be
there. But her mother didn’t make it.
And we had her funeral on the next
Monday.”
Jamie was out of town on business. Then there was the grief of the
Harris children to contend with. One
of the boys expressed his objection to
cremating Sid.
“It was just a lot,” Marian said.
“And then [Sid’s] dad was in really,
really bad pain. So it was all very
much a fog at that point.”
So Sid’s dad was in bad shape?
“He was in bad shape at the
same time – with back issues. That’s
why I went in to get medicine for his
dad. So we ended [up] making that
call on Wednesday, saying Sid needs
to put down. Well, his dad ended up
getting put down on that following
Thursday here at my house. I had a
vet come to our house – it was a bad
week, a very bad week.”
It had been one of the worst
weeks of her life.
“We were a bit surprised that he
could get in the car.”
“I’ll tell you the whole story,
everything from how long we spent at
the vet to the other dogs we’ve taken
to the vet, which kind of leads to the
concept of trust when you have inequitable trust. So when he [the vet]
says things like he’s got a congenital
spinal defect and it’s only going to
get worse, it won’t ever get better, we
would have no reason to not believe
him.”
When did he start having back
issues?
“He didn’t have any. He went to
the vet for an inner gland issue. And
then he had contacted us. Anybody
