couldn’t have been happier.
A few days later, Tate got a call that rocked
his world. Pappy was at the vet’s, about to go into
surgery. He came down with colic. Tate immedi-
ately went out to stand vigil and pray. The surgery
would take four hours.
Pappy survived but the road to recovery would
be slow. Tate went out to be with Pappy every day.
“I would just go out there and sit with him;
he was so weak and seemed so down. When that
horse was sick, I was sick and I am never sick, I
promise you that. That horse is more like a human
to me. I can’t really explain it, but my friend shared
a quote with me, he said, ‘There is something
about the outside of a horse that is good for the
inside of a man.’ That pretty much sums it up.
We’re back to riding, taking it slow but looking
forward to competing again in small-town competi-
tions. Yep, Pappy is now my horse,” he said.
When asked what he has learned from Pappy,
he said, “He has given me the ability to fine tune
exactly how my equestrian clients need to train to
enhance their performance in the ring.”
It seems that nature is a place of refuge for
Tate, that whether he is fishing or riding, he is in a
place away from the hustle where he can sort out
the perks of running his own business and, finally,
he is a loving pet owner, even if he thinks Pappy’s
human.
