was hanging underneath the hood of
her car,” Don said. “It was dangling
towards the ground. I walked around
the car and I said, ‘Lady you need
to get out of your pickup.’ She said,
‘Why?’ I said, ‘There’s a copperhead
underneath your truck, that’s crawling out from underneath it.’ Didn’t
take her but a second to get out of
her truck.”
Don’s favorite thing about the
business was meeting new people.
The only thing he didn’t like was
when the weather was too hot or
too cold. “I didn’t care for that too
much,” he said. But he managed
quite well, even with a little friendly
competition across the way.
Years ago, there was a Texaco, a
full-service station, right across the
street, owned by Loyal Dodie Sylvan.
They were competitors but between
the two there was no competitive
spirit. “His was a full-service station
and I was a full-service station and
we had our customers and he had
his,” Don said. “I don’t know if
you would call it competition. Just
mutual businesses and we both did
good.” While Loyal’s Texaco was in
business he never tried to undercut
Don and Don never tried to undersell
Dodie. It’s rare to see that kind of
friendship and respect among business owners today.
There have been only 25 employees in Don’s Chevron’s long history. They were mostly short-term, but
the best ones worked for him for over
10 years. Boyd Bush started working
for the station in 2001. At a grand
total of 16 years, that makes Boyd
the longest working employee in
