Whether designed to provide
a fine mist for flying through or to
wet foliage for secondary bathing,
misters add a useful element to the
garden. Attracting birds through
site and sound, misters are a fairly
low-maintenance way to increase
your bathing options for the birds.
Adding water to your backyard
is well worth it. The number of
birds that will use it daily, and
the number of species that will
show up in your yard in response
to the sound of water, will repay
many times the investment you
make in routine maintenance.
Birds really do enjoy bathing. As
soon as one bird begins to bathe,
others get the urge and quickly
follow its example. Sometimes you
may see whole flocks of robins or
Cedar waxwings trying to enter a
bath simultaneously. More often
you will see mixed bathing by
a number of species. Heads go
under, wings splash water over
backs and a frenzy of activity may
go on for several minutes. Often
there are return visits by the same
birds. Bathing is usually followed
by long preening in nearby bushes.
For best results, keep baths
nearly filled with water. Empty
and clean at frequent intervals to
ensure clean drinking and bathing
water.
