Schools Compete in Corn Hole Tournament
Read to Achieve Data Released
Eight CCS schools
competed in the Bags in the
‘Burg Corn Hole Tournament in
Harrisburg on Sept. 20th.
Tournament organizers
created a special school
category where school staff
would compete against each
other for a traveling trophy,
bragging rights, and a $1,000
donation to their school.
This year’s winning team
hailed from Hickory Ridge
Middle School (HiRMS).
Congratulations to Nick Hulyo
and Stephen Digh for taking
the top prize. The Cox Mill
High School team of Holly
Harris and Moses Smith came
in second place.
The HiRMS team has
been invited to participate
in the Fourth of July Corn
Hole event with the Mayor of
Harrisburg.
Next year, schools will
compete again to see who
can claim the trophy.
The N.C. Department of
Public Instruction recently
released Read to Achieve data
for the 2013-2014 school
year. The data indicates 79
percent of North Carolina
public school third grade
students met the reading
proficiency standards under
North Carolina’s Read to
Achieve program.
The Read to Achieve
Program is a part of the
Excellent Public Schools
Act, which became law in
July 2012 and applies to all
schools at the beginning of
the 2013-2014 school year.
Through the implementation
of this program, it is “the
goal of the State to ensure that every student read at or
above grade level by the end of third grade and continue
to progress in reading proficiency so that he or she can
read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts
needed for secondary education and career success.”
Cabarrus County Schools Read to Achieve data
indicates that 65 percent of CCS third grade students
met the reading proficiency standards.
