Encouraging healthy choices
Fit for Life at Huntingtowne Farms Elementary
Fifth-graders at Huntingtowne Farms Elementary got a surprise on
Monday, Sept. 29, when they met Olympic medalist Manteo Mitchell. The
track athlete visited the school as part of the Subway Fit for Life Challenge to
talk about making healthy choices.
The school is one of many participating in the two-week challenge
sponsored by local Subway restaurants in October. Mitchell was at the school
to spread the message of healthy eating and activity to fight childhood
obesity. He also shared with students that he broke his leg running the 4x400
meter race but finished anyway to help the U.S. win an Olympic medal in
2012.
“Keeping active and eating healthy is important whether you are an
athlete or not,” said Mitchell. “You don’t have to eat a salad every day. Mix it
up with fruits and vegetables.”
As students lined up to ask Mitchell questions, he asked them to tell him
what healthy snack they’d eaten over the weekend and what sport they liked
to play.
“I ate grapes and I like to play basketball,” said Davion Wesley. “I want to
know if you are rich because you are a professional athlete.”
Mitchell responded, “I am rich but not in the way you’re thinking. I do
make money from being an athlete but what makes me rich is being able to
devote my time to others.”
After the assembly, students looked at Mitchell’s Olympic silver medal and
participated in a relay race with him and Assistant Principal Summer Rogers.
“He broke his leg during his Olympic race, thought about who was
depending on him and finished,” said student Kayleigh Torres. “It shows life
has twists and turns but you don’t give up, you keep going.”

Challenge include Albemarle Road Elementary, J.M. Alexander Middle,
