LITERACY IS OUR FOCUS Success Through Community
Creating 100 Homework Centers with “Hot Spots”
As identified in the Rowan-Salisbury
Schools new Strategic Plan for 2014-2017,
Literacy is our main focus. We are challenged
with the goal of 90% of students reading on
or above grade level by 2017; in addition to
100% of student achieving or exceeding one
year’s grown annually.
Dr. Lynn Moody became the Superintendent for the RowanSalisbury Schools a little over one year ago. It is amazing to stop
and reflect on the amount of exciting changes that have come to our
district in just one year. Dr. Moody reflects the importance of total
buy-in to our school district. The new strategic plan was unveiled
last spring after many months of development meetings involving
business and community members, parents, students, teachers,
administrators and board of education members. The strategic plan
was officially unveiled at a forum sponsored by community partners
with the focus of the three-year plan being Literacy and Student
Engagement through Digital Conversion, Collaboration and ProblemBased Learning. We were connecting as a family, all for the goal of
student success.
In September, a Literacy Summit Community Forum was held
to a sell out crowd of faith-based partners, elected officials, school
administrators, parents and citizens. The forum was sponsored by
community partners. Dr. Moody presented the raw data followed by
a “Call to Action” to created 100 homework centers and ‘Hot Spots’
that would provide WiFi Internet access and supervision for students
that do not have Internet in their homes. Rowan-Salisbury is initiating
a district wide 1:1 digital conversion this year, placing a technology
device into the hands of every student as an engaging tool to enhance
learning.
To compliment the focus on literacy and student engagement,
media centers and classrooms are being renovated and transformed
to create colorful, inviting and fun collaborative spaces for student
learning environments. Yes, learning can be fun!
We continue to march forward with Collaborative, Connected,
Relevant and Personal (CCRP) instructional transformation.
And our new journey is just beginning…
