UCPS hosts appreciation luncheon for Hurricane Florence first responders When Hurricane Florence churned through North Carolina last month, Union County Public Schools (UCPS) team members as well as first responders and emergency management staff throughout the county joined together to help ensure the safety of Union County residents. They opened and maintained shelters, conducted rescues and provided assistance to those who needed it most. To express thanks for all of their hard work and leadership during Hurricane Florence and Tropical Storm Michael, UCPS hosted a First Responders Appreciation Luncheon for school district and county staff who played an integral role in the storm’s response and recovery efforts. “From our nurses who came and helped open up the shelters during the hurricane to all of the work that law enforcement and EMS did to ensure the safety of our students and citizens, we want to say thank you and acknowledge all of your hard work,” UCPS Superintendent Dr. Andrew Houlihan said during the luncheon. “Thank you for keeping us safe and thank you for all that you do.” UCPS custodian Odell Kilgo, who was recently praised by the Board of Education for his assistance at one of the local shelters during the hurricane, said he appreciated the luncheon. “I’m fortunate to work for the best school district in the state, and it feels good to know that the work we do is appreciated,” he said. “It’s also good to know that all of these different organizations in the county can come together and work side by side to help all of Union County’s citizens.” HOW ARE YOUR CHILD’S GRADES?
