17 UCPS students chosen for 2014 Governor’s School Seventeen Union County Public Schools students have joined hundreds of the most distinguished North Carolina rising high school juniors and seniors at the 2014 Governor’s School. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas, is located on two campuses: Governor’s School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and Governor’s School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. Opening day of the 2014 session of the Governor’s School was June 15. It concluded Wednesday, July 23. Terry Sanford. Governor’s School West began in 1963 and Governor’s School East began in 1978. The program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, State Board of Education, Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division.
