Budding chefs get a taste for global cuisine in culinary summer camp What do you get when you put 20 budding chefs in a kitchen for four days? Italian paninis, homemade bread, fondant roses, oreo truffles, homemade cinnamon rolls and more. That is, if you’re at the Career Readiness culinary summer camp. More than 20 eighth and ninth graders participated in weeklong crash course in culinary arts at Cuthbertson High, where they learned about kitchen fundamentals and global cuisine. “My favorite part about this camp is learning how to make delicious food from scratch,” said rising ninth grader Xander Jezek. Echoing that sentiment, ninth grader Samuel Joshua said he’s also enjoyed the week in culinary camp. “We cook a lot of amazing food and it comes out good because of amazing teachers like Troy, Ms. Carnathan and Ms. (Carolyn) Hoober,” he said. Taking a break from helping her students make homemade pasta and sauces from four different countries, Cuthbertson High culinary instructor Stefanie Carnathan said her goal for the week was to expose students to a career field they may have never considered before. “When people think about cooking, sometimes they’re kind of intimidated by it. But I have been blown away by the things that the students have been able to grasp and do in such a short amount of time,” Stefanie said. “Kids at this age may not know what they want to pursue in the future. But exposing them to trade positions – and not only trade positions but even executive positions in this industry – could spark an interest that could change their lives.” Afterschool Art Classes School Fundraisers Paint & Tea Nights Birthday Parties 704.962.0913 EXCITING NEWS!
