National Blue Ribbon Schools
Shiloh Elementary, Weddington Middle
Two Union County Public Schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools of
Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
announced the national winners saying, “Excellence in education matters and we should
honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and
careers. National Blue Ribbon Schools represent examples of educational excellence, and
their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.”
The teachers and staff at Shiloh Elementary and Weddington Middle Schools were
informed about the awards recently during a visit by UCPS Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis.
“My hat is off to you guys,” Ellis said to the Weddington Middle School teachers and staff.
“You have autographed your work with excellence since the school was opened.”
“I salute you and I applaud you,” Ellis said at Shiloh Elementary. “This is the pinnacle of
a career. Congratulations.”
There were six schools in North Carolina that won this award. Three were early colleges,
two were elementary schools and one was a middle school. Two of the six are UCPS schools.
There was only one middle school in North Carolina to be recognized. “We are proud
