Fifteen schools receive state recognition for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support
A record 15 UCPS schools recently received state recognition for their Positive Behavior Intervention and Support ( PBIS ) systems , and were praised for supporting high student performance while reducing behavioral problems . PBIS systems are data-driven initiatives that improve social competence and academic achievement for students , with a goal of creating a predictable , positive , safe and consistent schoolwide culture .
The 15 schools received Green Ribbon , Model and Exemplar recognition for implementing a multilayered , schoolwide support system for students . PBIS systems set schoolwide and teaching expectations with acknowledgement and feedback when students follow those expectations . Schools that were selected for state recognition completed team trainings , implemented PBIS strategies and performed well on schoolwide evaluations .
Parkwood Middle Principal Dr . Jeff Kraftson , whose school received a Green Ribbon designation , said he is thrilled to have students , staff and community members embrace the school ’ s PBIS strategies . In addition to posting a standardized matrix of rules around the school , students who exhibit positive behaviors are given “ feedback tickets ” that can be redeemed for prizes in a school store .
What ’ s important about the PBIS system , Dr . Kraftson said , is that it gives students affirmations that reinforce positive behaviors while also serving as a positive form of peer pressure because students enjoy being recognized .
“ Here at Parkwood Middle School , we firmly believe in recognizing students for all of the positive behaviors they do day in and day out ,” he said . “ I am particularly proud of our PBIS committee who has worked diligently to implement PBIS and helped develop it into what it is today . We are excited to see how PBIS will continue to develop Respectful , Responsible , and Ready students .”
This year , Indian Trail Elementary earned an Exemplar designation , which is the highest PBIS recognition . Like Parkwood Middle , the elementary school also has a rewards system where students can earn tickets that can be redeemed at a later date for various prizes that include pajama days , the opportunity to eat lunch with a friend or more .
Many of the encouraged behaviors in the Leader in Me program pairs well with the PBIS strategies , said Indian Trail Elementary Principal Gina Chisum , and the school has also implemented interventions and frequent check-ins with students who may have behavior problems in class . This creates a system of accountability while also letting students know someone at the school is invested in them .
“ We are coaching the children to be college and career ready , not just academically , but in their skills and life as well . So we put systems in place to make sure that is occurring at all levels in the school ,” she said . “ The whole school environment has embraced this philosophy that every student has value , every student can learn and every student can contribute greatness – and capitalizing on that unique greatness makes students the very best they can be .” — This article was provided by the Union County Public Schools Communications Office .
The Green Ribbon , Model and Exemplar schools will be recognized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction at its 2017 Recognition Program on Tuesday , Nov . 14 .
