UCPS students say, ‘Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!’
Union County Public Schools joined the
nationwide effort to get every elementary
school student to celebrate reading during a
March 2 event called Read Across America,
which coincided with the 113th birthday of Dr.
Seuss.
Robbie Long, parent of fourth and fifth
graders at Prospect Elementary, read the Dr.
Seuss’ book Cat in the Hat to students.
“I think it’s fun for the kids to have parents
read,” he said. “I’m reading Cat in the Hat, but
my favorite Dr. Seuss book is Green Eggs and
Ham.”
Parents and community volunteers spent
the morning in UCPS elementary schools
reading Dr. Seuss to students.
“Reading is important and I think it’s really
important for parents to be involved with their
children in the classroom,” said Amanda Griffin,
who read in her son Parker’s class.
Reading aloud in class was much fun that
after Amanda Griffin finished, her son Parker
decided to read aloud in Paula Jacobsen’s class.
“I enjoyed reading to my little sister,
Kinley’s preschool class,” he said. “I just felt like
reading in front of my friends. It was kind of
fun. I like speaking in public.”
Schools also took the opportunity to dress
like a character from one of Dr. Suess’ books.
