Continued ... Helping others is life lesson for Forest Hills High School students
Forest Hills High School student Jenna Perry is one of 35 runners who braved 23-degree temperatures in this 5-K color run event .
to see when we brought the books . It made me feel grateful for everything we do have .”
Forest Hills senior Avery Selby said her group chose to assist the ARC of Union County by holding a color run at Wingate University . It raised a total of $ 1,927 for the agency .
“ It was fun and a learning experience ,” Avery said . “ We thought it would get a lot of interest in our area because we don ’ t normally have things like that . There are 5Ks , but a color run was something different , so that ’ s why we picked that .”
Thirty-five runners braved 23-degree temperatures in this 5-K event in which participants are showered with colored powder ( made of cornstarch ) at stations along the run .
The semester-long class culminated with a Service Learning Project Fair held at the school , at which each group presented their project to a panel of judges .
The judges offered comments and suggestions after each presentation . One judge , Superintendent Dr . Andrew Houlihan , commended students for their hard work and the impact they had on the community . He also offered suggestions for future projects .
“ One thing for all of you to remember , sometimes people are willing to do whatever you need them to do ; you just have to ask them ,” Houlihan said . “ You have to ask for help . There is nothing wrong with asking for help .”
After each presentation , students presented a check to each agency : Union County Crisis Assistance Ministry ($ 535.04 ); Union County Literacy Council ($ 780.79 ); the ARC of Union County ($ 1,927.29 ); and the Union County Community Shelter ($ 764.63 ).
Union County Crisis Assistance Ministry board member Ginger Tucker accepted the check on behalf of her agency .
“ It ’ s amazing what they ’ ve done ,” Tucker said . “ Not only did they learn more about their community through a class activity , but they also actually became involved . They ’ ve seen what it ’ s like to get personally involved , not to just hold a canned-food drive . Those are always helpful , but you can tell that impacting the lives of others has impacted these students ’ lives .”
Forest Hills principal Dr . Kevin Plue said the lessons from these projects would last a lifetime .

They may not remember some of the other stuff , but they ’ ll remember this .”
