Rocky River Elementary identified as Title 1 Reward School Rocky River Elementary School is one of 78 Title 1 schools statewide that has been recognized for student performance. The school has earned state recognition as 2014-15 Title 1 Reward School again this year. It was designated as a “high performance school.” Last year Rocky River Elementary School was designated among high-progress Title 1 schools in the state. Richardson said her school was recognized again this year because its academic performance is higher than not only many other Title 1 schools, but many non-title 1 schools, as well. “Our students consistently learn and grow at high levels resulting in achievement that makes others notice and wonder, ‘What is going on at that school?’ ” she said. “Amazing and targeted teaching from our staff helps our students move along a pathway to reach grade-level proficiency,” she added. “Our students care and take pride in their work and take responsibility as leaders of their own learning.” Richardson added that her school community cares, holds one another accountable, and “believes in our children and accepts only the best from our students.” Rocky River was selected based on assessment data from the 201314 school year and the two previous years. A “reward school” is a Title I school that is either: • A “highest-performing school” which is a school among the top 10 percent of Title I schools in the State that have the highest absolute performance over a number of years for the “all students” group and for all subgroups on the statewide assessments; or • A “high-progress school” which is a school among the 10 percent of Title I schools in the State that are making the most progress in improving the performance of the “all students” group over a number of years on the statewide assessments. All Reward Schools are invited to submit portfolios that identify the best practices that contributed to their success. Members of the Title I Distinguished Schools Advisory Council review the portfolios and, along with on-site visits, determine one school for each category to represent North Carolina in the national Title I Distinguished Schools Program.
