COMEFLYWITH US !
Wingate Elementary students wrapped in holiday cheer
It was hard to tell who was more excited , the middle school students who brought the presents or the elementary school students who received them .
Enthusiastic squeals and big smiles were commonplace among Wingate Elementary kindergarten and second-grade students as they were given a brand new coat by Cuthbertson Middle School students .
“ I love my new coat ,” said kindergartener Francheska Jones . “ It ’ s pink . My mom will like it too because her favorite color is pink .”
About 200 new coats were purchased on a voluntary basis by individual Cuthbertson Middle School students , wrapped and then brought to the school Thursday , Dec . 15 . This is the second year CMS has partnered with Wingate for this project .
“ I picked out the coat myself . It was fun ,” said Cuthbertson seventh grader Chibuzo Iheme . “ My little buddy is a really good kid . This was a good experience .”
“ I just picked out what I thought a little girl would like ,” said seventh grader Caroline Karpinski . “ My favorite part was seeing her face when she opened the present . She was surprised and really happy . I really enjoyed this . It ’ s fun to meet new people and I like helping little kids out . I did this last year , too .”
Lauren Habicht , a Wingate Elementary kindergarten teacher , said Cuthbertson Middle School students did an excellent job of providing coats for their little “ Wingate buddies .” “ Our kids really love it ,” Habicht said . “ They get so excited .” Curt Miller , a CMS counselor , said participation in the program is voluntary , and the cost of the jacket comes out of the student ’ s own pocket rather than a fund-raiser . “ The parents enjoy this , too . They love for their children to be involved in events like this .”
Miller said the Wingate coat project is a wonderful opportunity for middle school students to reach out into the community and give back .
“ Our kids just love it ,” Miller said . “ It ’ s a wonderful way for them to get out and serve , and just know that they ’ re helping someone .”
Wingate Elementary principal , Dr . Mike Henderson , said this is the second year his students have benefited from the generosity of Cuthbertson Middle School students .
“ It ’ s so appreciated ,” Henderson said . “ Yes , they ’ re giving the kids a great gift – a jacket ; but even more importantly , they ’ re spending some quality time with our kids .”
After kindergarten students opened their presents , they were joined for lunch by their middle school buddies .
