Rowan-Salisbury School Highlights Southeast Middle SEMS Coffee Hour Staff from Southeast Middle gathered over the summer to collaborate on the new technology rollout in preparation for the coming year. Those participating shared ideas on how to use Google Docs, iPad Apps, Twitter and a variety of other resources for instruction. Carson High The Carson Family is excited about the beginning of a new school year! Fall athletic programs began their practices over the summer and the JCHS Theatre put on its first performance of the summer, which was entitled Death by Dessert. Additionally, teachers attended a variety of trainings throughout the summer that will help provide an Extraordinary Education Every Day! Rowan County Early College Jeniffer Bain, Math teacher at RCEC, was selected as part of the Governor’s Teacher Network. She will be creating mathematics instructional resources to be housed on Home Base and shared with teachers across the state. Charles Patton, RCEC’s Science Teacher, attended the first National Institute of Health’s (NIH) STaAR Research Program, a NIH created program with NC New Schools. Within this newly launched, and hopefully spreading program the child of Dr. Birnbaum, NIH’s Director, with her staff’s assistance introduces Biotechnology into the NC Science classroom in an innovative way. NIH currently plans and is partnering with Mr. Patton plus his students along with 10 other select Science Teachers in NC this year to perform such labs in the classroom. The beauty of this joint effort is that RCEC (maybe RCCC) students engage fully in these practices by employment of well-designed labs (like Mr. Patton and the 10 teachers) performed during a 2-week workshop this past Summer (2014) at NIH’s Research Triangles’ location. From here, hands on labs stood directed by NIH experts and assisted or directed by NIH’s current Research efforts. These applications and labs will now be assisted by PhD Staffers in RCEC’s Science Room or at RCCC with direct in-class assistance from NIH’s experts. With this opportunity, future student and teacher summer externships are possible.
