Rowan-Salisbury Schools Announce : Teacher Of The Year And Principal Of The Year
Jesse Carson High School Teacher Zachary Overcash is the new 2018-2019 Rowan-Salisbury ‘ Teacher of the Year .’ The announcement was made at the district ’ s annual ‘ Back to School Conference ' held on August 21st at East Rowan High School .
Overcash was honored , along with 34 other teachers representing each school in the district , following Superintendent Dr . Lynn Moody ’ s opening session to teachers titled , ‘ Inspiring Passionate Engagement in Learning .’ The Rowan- Salisbury Board of Education , Dr . Moody , and the 2017-2018 RSS Teacher of the Year , Abby Covington , presented each teacher with an engraved medal and certificate .
With the title of “ Teacher of the Year ,” Overcash received a new 2018 Jeep Compass from Gerry Wood Auto Group presented by Brad Wood and Dillon Brewer . This entitles Overcash to a free car-lease for the school year . In addition , Overcash received a plaque along with a $ 1,000 reimbursement grant for school supplies presented by Rowan Partners for Education Co-Chair Susan Steele and Rowan County Chamber of Commerce President Elaine Spalding .
Overcash has been a math teacher at Carson High since 2007 , except for serving one year as a math teacher at South Rowan High in 2013 .
Overcash was selected among five finalists . In addition to Overcash , the finalists included :
• Allison Adams from Erwin Middle
• Kathy Mauzy from Faith Elementary
• Deborah Jones from Granite Quarry Elementary
• Ashley Holshouser from North Rowan Elementary
PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR
Kelly Withers , principal at South Rowan High School , was named the 2018-2019 Rowan- Salisbury ‘ Principal of the Year .’
The announcement was made this morning by Superintendent Dr . Lynn Moody assisted by the RSS 2017-2018 Principal of the Year Angelo DelliSanti .
Withers was selected among 5 finalists . In addition to Withers , the finalists included :
• Lisa Sigmon from Bostian Elementary
• Kris Wolfe from Cleveland and Woodleaf
Elementary schools
• Marvin Moore from Isenberg Elementary
• Brooke Zehmer from Landis Elementary
Amy Brannigan from Belk of Salisbury presented Withers with a $ 250 gift certificate .
Approximately 1600 teachers and administrators filled the East Rowan gym with cheers when the announcement was made .
Withers began her career as a high school science teacher at West Rowan High School in 2000 and then moved into the position of Assistant Principal at Jesse Carson High in 2006 . She became principal at Carson in 2010 before moving to South Rowan High School where she has served as principal since 2014 .
In 2012 , Withers was named RSS Principal of the Year and went on to be selected as the Northwest Regional Principal of the Year .
Withers is married to Lee and is the proud mother of three children .
Overcash will now move forward in competing for the regional title of Teacher of the Year . The North Carolina State Teacher of the Year will be announced in the spring of 2019 and selected from the regional winners across the state .
Withers will now move forward in competing at the regional level for Principal of the Year . The Wells Fargo NC Principal of the Year will be announced in the spring of 2019 and selected from regional winners across the state .

At Rowan-Salisbury Schools , taking care of our children continues right on through the summer break . In addition to offering numerous educational camps for our children , our School Nutrition staff remain committed to ensuring that our children continue to receive meals during the summer months .
For the second consecutive year , we have merged together our district ’ s focus on literacy , with our summer meals program in an effort to be sure that our children are keeping nourished both in their bodies and minds .
With amazing contributions and hard-joyful work from staff , we set out on two days over the summer to deliver book bags full of appropriate grade-level books to our children on our Yum-Yum bus routes . It has been a truly inspiring summer !
Gift from Local Realtors
Association The RSS Summer Meals Program received a check from the Salisbury-Rowan Realtors Association for $ 2000 . The presentation was made on August 9th . The funds were raised through a golf tournament sponsored by the realtors . We are very appreciative for their support and partnership in caring for our children .
