2016-2017 Rowan-Salisbury Principal of the Year Dr. Jamie Durant, principal at West Rowan High School, was named the 2016-2017 Rowan-Salisbury Principal of the Year. The announcement was made following Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody’s opening session for the district’s annual 2016 ‘Back To School Teacher Conference.” The conference was held at South Rowan High School. Dr. Durant has been with Rowan-Salisbury Schools since 2002 holding positions of assistant principal and principal. Belk of Salisbury presented Dr. Durant with a $500 gift certificate for a wardrobe from the Belk store in Salisbury. Approximately 1500 teachers and administrators filled the Raider gym with cheers as Dr. Durant’s name was announced. Dr. Durant will now move forward in competing at the regional level for Principal of the Year. The NC State Principal of the Year will be announced in the spring of 2017 and selected from regional winners across the state. Isenberg’s Gator Reading Club Soars! ~ Reaching Out to Senior Citizens and Faith-Based Communities Last school year, St. John’s Lutheran Church kicked off a targeted reading program with a select group of third graders from Isenberg Elementary School. Called the Gator Reading Club, students were tutored twice a week for an hour by a group of dedicated volunteers. Students who received tutors last year showed growth in critical reading indicators after receiving the coaching from these volunteers. This year, Isenberg is reaching out to other community groups for more volunteers. Principal Marvin Moore asked a group of senior residents from Trinity Oaks to join in the effort to provide third grade students extra mentoring and academic support through a prescriptive program that includes targeted reading interventions. Isenberg is fortunate to have other faith-based partners that will also be invited to join in this wonderful effort. Rowan-Salisbury Schools The time posted for the start time is the time classes actually begin. Students should arrive a few minutes earlier in order to avoid being marked tardy and to prepare for the beginning of instruction.
