Rowan Manufacturers Open Doors to 330 Students on Manufacturing Day Henderson said the tours provide a look into the many career paths that the manufacturing sector has to offer. “This event was about companies reaching tomorrow’s workforce at an early age,” said Henderson. “We wanted to open their minds to the world of manufacturing and inspire them to take a path that will lead them to a rewarding and successful career.” Manufacturing Day 2018 was a huge success in Rowan County with over 330 Rowan- Salisbury students and school staff exploring career option and the role of manufacturing in our community. The event took place in early October. Participants were able to visit eleven manufacturing companies including the following: Custom Plastic Forming Trelleborg Blast-it-All Chandler Concrete Amrep Agility Fuel solutions Power Curbers Continental Structural Plastics GemFab Henkel Dalmier Trucks Mandy Milles, Career and Technical Education Director for Rowan-Salisbury Schools organized many of the tours along with the assistance of Kendall Henderson, Director of Business Services for the EDC. “We try to line up all the different high schools to go to as many manufacturers as we could throughout the week,” Mills said. “We’re trying to change the perception that’s out there.” Sofie Freeze Honored at BOE Meeting Congratulations to Sofie Freeze from Woodleaf Elementary School. Sofie was recognized and honored at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, September 24th. Sofie was interviewed and featured in the national publication by Tynker for her use of coding to create projects featuring animals. Sofie's third-grade teacher introduced her to the App 'Tynker-Coding for Kids' on her iPad. Sofie's animations were included in the article posted by Tynker. Her animations received over 2,500 views! One of Sofie's future plans is to one day have a mobile vet clinic so she can save animals. In Rowan County, the manufacturing industry employs 7,451 people and pays an average weekly wage of $1,057. For every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, another $1.89 is added to the economy.
