TEACHER BREAKFAST MEETINGS WITH THE
SUPERINTENDENT
ANTHONY JOHNSON RECEIVES
THE KIRK SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Moody's breakfast meetings continue to be a huge success among
teachers. So, again this year, Dr. Moody is hosting her "Teacher Breakfast
Meetings” for this school year. The meetings are held at the Wallace
Educational Forum.
The October 6th breakfast meeting included a Teacher-of-the-Year for
each school. This is the only date that a special group of teachers is specified.
One teacher from each school is invited to an informal breakfast with the
Superintendent. The breakfast meetings are held in the early morning from
7:30 am until 9:00 am on Thursdays with a delicious breakfast prepared for
them by our School Nutrition staff.
These breakfast events provide Dr. Moody an opportunity to invite an
informal conversation with teachers about challenges facing our schools today
or whatever topic or questions the teachers would like to discuss. Teachers
anonymously write questions on index cards and Dr. Moody answers the
questions. This frequently invites an open dialogue with the teachers.
The breakfast meetings are finished by 9:00 am, so teachers can return
to their schools without missing too much class time.
These meetings allow teachers to return to their schools with factual and
encouraging messages to share with staff.
At the September Board of Education meeting, Isenberg teacher Anthony
Johnson received the Phillip J. Kirk, Jr. Honored Educator Scholarship award.
Mr. Phil Kirk made the presentation to Mr. Johnson, the district’s current
Teacher of the Year. The Kirk Scholarship covers the costs associated for a
five-day seminar to NCCAT (NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching).
In 2007, the Development Foundation of the North Carolina Center for
the Advancement of Teaching honored Mr. Kirk for being one NC’s best-known
advocates for education by establishing the scholarship fund. Mr. Kirk chose to
present the scholarship each year to the district’s Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Kirk is a native of Salisbury and a graduate of Catawba College. He
began his career as a teacher at Salisbury High and Knox Middle schools
before moving into the world of politics serving under two governors. Mr.
Kirk served for more than six years as Chairman of the NC State Board of
Education.
Mr. Kirk currently serves as the Director of Business and Leadership
Development for Brady Energy Services.
