Message from Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody
Happy Fall! As the fall season
brings beautiful colors and a fresh
nip in the air, this time of year also
serves to remind me to be grateful
for all that we have achieved
through the support of each other
and our wonderful community
partnerships.
I am grateful to our hard
working educators and students
as they make change happen and
transition into a higher level of
teaching and learning. This marks
the beginning of the second year
in implementing our Strategic Plan
with our focus on Literacy and
Engaged Student Learning. It is
exciting to see the changes taking
place in more and more classrooms
across our district and to see the
students becoming more engaged and excited about what they are learning.
It is a slow process that takes time to implement but the rewards are
extraordinary.
Our community is invited to see this change happen.
Each Wednesday, one of our schools opens their doors to welcome
community supporters, elected officials and school administrators to see
and hear about what is happening in their particular school. Classrooms are
changing in their collaborative learning spaces and in the level of instruction
taking place to provide a higher level of rigor. Visitors have the opportunity
to hear an overview from the principal followed by tours of the classrooms
led by student ambassadors. A schedule of school visits can be found on our
district’s website under ‘District Information’ at: www.rss.k12.nc.us
One change that we are most excited to be initiating this school year is

by focusing on the individual reading level of each student to:
n Improve their reading and writing skills
n Increase their rigorous academic standards
n Prepare them for assessments
This is exciting because Achieve3000 meets each student
at their precise reading level and helps them to accelerate their
reading growth. It links together our district’s literacy framework
and digital conversion. Our teachers are excited to now have the
