Students Honored for Reading Achievements
RSS students were honored at a recent school board meeting for achievements in reading .
Approximately 200 students met the challenge to read 120 or more Achieve3000 articles scoring a targeted 75 % or higher . Once each student achieved this goal , they were presented with an iRead 120 bracelet . All students were then honored at a school board meeting held in March , and then presented with Certificates of Achievement by their principals at their individual schools the following morning .
Studies find that with every 40 Achieve3000 articles that students complete , with the projected achievement score , will increase their level of reading . Many of these students are self-motivated and read articles on their own , as well as reading articles followed with discussions in their classrooms .
Congratulations students , teachers , and parents for working together to help our students be successful .
Literacy is a focus in the schools and district strategic plan .
The Early College Partnered with the Center for Faith & Arts and the Lee Street Theatre
Through a collaborative partnership with the Center for Faith and Arts , and the Lee Street Theatre , RCEC freshmen teachers created an integrated project . This project supported the theater production of Ann Frank : Diary of a Young Girl .
In Kristin Walker ’ s ELA class , the students read excerpts from Stolen Voices which includes young people ’ s war diaries from World War I to Iraq . Students then created diary entries as a continuation to the ones in Stolen Voices .
Theresa Pierce ’ s history class created either identification cards that included facts of the young adult ’ s life , or display boards with photographs and a timeline .
Jeniffer Bain made math connections with the project by teaching her students to make infographics , which included facts and figures for each country represented by the Stolen Voices selections .
Charles Patton , Biology teacher , applied the effects of stress and war on young people .
Additionally , each teacher led the students in lessons that ranged from Japanese internment to life in a concentration camp .
The students attended the Lee Street theatre production of Anne Frank where their classroom work was displayed in the lobby . RCEC also hosted Bonnie Hause , child of Holocaust survivor Rebecca Hause in February .
In April , students visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington , DC .
