STUDENTS HOLD ‘FIRST’ OFFICIAL MEETING IN THE NEW WALLACE EDUCATIONAL FORUM Student Leadership Team Presents On Improving Schools Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody’s “Extraordinary” Student Leadership Team invited local, state and national elected officials, community partners and administrators to attend their presentation on how they believe high schools in the Rowan-Salisbury Schools can improve in making schools more inviting for students. The Student Leadership Team (SLT) was the first to hold an official meeting and presentation in the new administrative office building – Wallace Educational Forum. The event took place on March 14th in the Board of Education Meeting Room. The group of approximately 45 students presented on the following four (4) topics: 1. Career Clusters – to explore the problems of Why are we here? and Why are we learning this? 2. Collaborative Spaces – to explain the purpose, goals and what happens inside and outside the classrooms 3. Independent Learn Time – to describe the “Power U” model, the benefits of ILT and what can be accomplished in an hour 4. Cultural Learning - to create more social appreciation, education and first-hand experiences The SLT has been meeting with Dr. Moody, Executive Director for Secondary Education Dr. Eisa Cox and Public Information Officer Rita Foil since October discussing their ideas on how they can make learning environments more exciting and engaging for high school students in our district. The group decided on the above topics, divided into groups and then began researching more deeply on how this could happen at RSS. Many students met outside the scheduled meeting times to prepare their presentations. The SLT prepared the invitation list of those they felt would be most influential in hearing their message. Students emailed and called many of those invited to personally extend the invitation. With approximately 150 in attendance on March 14th, The SLT engaged visitors with their energy and excitement for improving learning at their high schools. Guests were impressed with the students’ innovative approach to teaching and learning. They enjoyed hearing from the students as to what they believe will make high schools more relevant to not only meeting the needs of students, but also making us more prepared to be competitive in the business world. Mr. Paul Fisher and Mr. Steve Fisher from F&M Bank sponsored a luncheon in the Wallace Educational Forum’s third floor training room for all those in attendance. The Rowan-Salisbury School Nutrition Department prepared the delicious meal for the visitors and guests. Thank You F&M for supporting students! Parent Teacher News• May/June 2016 • 3
