Isenberg Elementary Students Reach Out To South Sudan African Schools
Isenberg Elementary School ’ s K-Kids ( Kiwanis Kids ) are moving at a fast pace implementing a service project that benefits schools in the African nation of South Sudan . K-Kids is a service and leadership development club for Isenberg ’ s 5th graders . Club members participate in community service projects that develop character , empathy and social skills .
On April 8th , three of the K-Kids officers , Adamma Anukwuem ( President ), Natavia Reid ( Vice-President ) and Amber Bostian ( Secretary ) made a presentation at the Salisbury Kiwanis Club luncheon held at the Salisbury Country Club . During their presentation , students thanked the local service organization for providing support and encouragement to Isenberg students for the past five years . Student leaders also shared plans for the upcoming Walk for Wisdom event and introduced Ngor Kur Mayol , one of the Lost Boys of Sudan , that helped inspire the Raising South Sudan project -- a school construction , education and teacher training effort .
Isenberg is participating in Any1Can Walk for Wisdom 2016 project in support of the Raising South Sudan educational partnership . To support this project in South Sudan , the world ’ s newest and most fragile country , several opportunities are available to Isenberg students .
• Attended an assembly to learn about life in South Sudan with Ngor Kur Mayol
• Held a pajama day in support of South Sudan
• Participated in the Walk for Wisdom event held at Isenberg
• Presented at the Kiwanis Club Luncheon
In 2001 , nearly 4,000 former “ Lost Boys of Sudan ” were invited to come to the U . S . as refugees and become citizens . Many of the Lost Boys who reside in the U . S . are key catalysts in promoting peace and education in their home country .
“ Any1Can 2016 Walk for Wisdom ,” a service learning program created by Charlotte-based 501c3 non-profit Mothering Across Continents ( www . motheringacrosscontinents . org ) supports two primary schools serving three villages in Unity State , South Sudan , where 90 % of the adult population cannot read . Funds are designated for scholarships , teacher training , meals , solar lights , uniforms , books , and school supplies . Isenberg is one of 11 schools throughout the U . S . participating in the Walk for Wisdom service-learning project . Isenberg ’ s K-Kids , the Isenberg PTA and Sudan Rowan are facilitating Isenberg ’ s Walk for Wisdom event .
