n Brandon Sloop, Jesse Carson High School; Bryce Vandenberg is the

WEST ROWAN HIGH STUDENT COMPETES FOR STATE YOUNG
ARTIST SCHOLARSHIP
Daniel Winecoff was selected by a live audition to be among 13
finalists for the prestigious “Hayes Young Artist” scholarship competition
held recently at Appalachian State University. Although not winning this title,
Daniel did bring home a $3,000 scholarship! Daniel Trivette is the WRHS
Band Director.
CLMS STUDENT WINS AT STATE POSTER COMPETITION
Congratulations to Mallory Weast for winning 3rd place in the North
Carolina Career Development Association’s poetry and poster contest. The
theme was “Reimagining Life’s Possibilities: Celebrating First Jobs Through
Encore Careers.” Mallory’s poster will continue to the national level contest.

COMPETITION
Three West Rowan High student FFA teams are state winners in NC and
qualified for the Nationals to be held in Louisville Kentucky. The teams were

DISTRICT “ALL COUNTY CHORUS” SHOWCASES
STUDENT TALENTS
The Rowan-Salisbury middle and high school choral departments
held their annual All County Chorus concert on Friday April 17th at East
Rowan High School. Approximately 150 students from around the county
participated in rehearsals during the day prior to the event.
The All County Chorus showcased the students’ hard work during the
concert that made for a fun, entertaining and enjoyable event.
The clinician for middle school choirs was Mr. Robert Waller, a South
Rowan graduate and currently Director of Fine Arts for Buncombe County
Schools.
The clinician for high school choirs was Dr. Marc Foster from High Point
University.
Mr. Dean Orbison, Choral Director at East Rowan High School,
coordinated the district event.
CGMS “ROCKS” CAROWINDS FESTIVAL OF MUSIC
In April, the 7th and 8th grade bands from China Grove Middle School
performed at the “2015 Carowinds Festival of Music” for a panel of judges.
The students were scored on musical accuracy and musicality.
The China Grove Bands received a “Superior” rating from the judges. A
Superior rating is the highest rank a band can receive at a music festival.
The Band performed 3 musical selections:
n Forward March by Paul Murtha
n Air of Nobility by James Swearingen
n Celtic Air and Dance No. 2 by Michael Sweeney

GOVERNOR’S TEACHER NETWORK SELECTIONS
Six RSS teachers have been selected to participate in the Governor’s
Teacher Network.
Gov. Pat McCrory, in partnership with the N.C. Department of Public
Instruction, established the network to recognize and reward teachers who
can help advance Race to the Top-funded education efforts.
About 450 teachers from the state’s 115 school districts were selected for
one-year terms, beginning in the summer of 2014 through spring 2015, as
content experts and professional development creators and facilitators.
The Rowan Salisbury School teachers selected are:
