Governor’s School Attendees Announced
Force and Motion at Erwin Middle
Five Rowan-Salisbury School System students have been chosen to attend
the 2014 session of the Governor’s School of North Carolina. This year’s fiveweek program begins June 15 and ends July 23 with a break from July 3-6.
The Governor’s School is held at two locations; Governor’s School East
is located on the campus of Meredith College in Raleigh and Governor’s
School West is located on the campus of Salem College in Winston-Salem. Four
hundred students are chosen to attend Governor’s School at each of the two
locations.
Governor’s School is a five-week summer residential program for
intellectually gifted high school rising seniors.
The Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education, and the
Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division
administer the program and a Board of Governors, appointed by the State Board
of Education acts as an advisory board.
Force and Motion is part of the 7th grade science curriculum. In April,
students on the ‘Phoenix Team’ at Erwin Middle School participated in a
“Science Fun Day.” The day before students selected teams and designed and
constructed catapults
using 20 popsicle
sticks and 10 rubber
bands. The “Science
Fun Day” included
competitions where
the teams could
test their projects.
Such as Skee-ball,
bowling, football
punt, tennis serve,
