Follow the LEGO Brick Road….
In early April, elementary and middle school students from across the district met to show off their LEGO Robotics skills with a Wizard of Oz theme.
Elementary School students were challenged to develop a better way to get
the ‘Cowardly Lion’ out of the deadly poppy fields. Using WeDo robotics, the
students created a motorized contraption to assist the Lion safely from the field.
They also created a Show Me board to explain their trials and errors and to
display their team efforts.
Middle School students navigated through four challenges using Mindstorm NXT robots. Some of the tasks completed by each team’s robot include
getting the Scarecrow to the other side of the river without any wheels touching
the water, spinning on a tornado at least three turns, and knocking the Scarecrow and the Lion down the Hammer Head Mountains.
At the conclusion of the competition, the awards went to the following:
Amazing Movement Award: Bostian Elementary(for best use of motors in
the design)
Middle:
1st Place: Erwin
2nd Place: Knox
3rd Place: Southeast
Elementary:
Explosive Idea Award: Overton Elementary(for flash, sizzle, and pizzazz….
eye-catching research board and explosive model)
Picasso Award: Knollwood Elementary(for artistic prowess)
Lil’ Einstein Award: Faith Elementary(for in-depth knowledge of their
model)
Mater Programmer Award: Woodleaf Elementary(for robot programming
extraordinaire)
Simply Awesome Machine Award: Shive Elementary(for excellence in
simple machine design)
