What is NTHS? By Debbie Haynes, WRHS The National Technical Honor Society currently serves approximately 100,000 active members and nearly a million members since its inception in 1984. Awarding over $1.7 million in scholarships to date, NTHS honors the achievements of top CTE students, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today’s highly competitive, skilled workforce. For over 30 years, NTHS has been the acknowledged leader in the recognition of outstanding student achievement in career and technical education. NTHS requires a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and the nominee must be enrolled in a CTE (career technical) program. In addition to NTHS requirements, additional suggested criteria include credit hours completed, attendance, instructor nominations, disciplinary records, and CTSO (Career & Technical Student Organization) membership. NTHS student member Letters of Recommendation will be mailed directly to a potential employer, an admissions registrar or a scholarship committee. Members will need to log in as current NTHS members. After successful login, the Student Menu is located on the welcome page. Students are able to request custom letters of recommendation and apply for scholarships by clicking the appropriate link on the Student Menu. NTHS helps schools to: n n n n n n Offer additional scholarship opportunities to CTE students. Communicate a strong, positive image in the local community. Attract and recruit qualified, diverse students into CTE programs. Bu ild active partnerships with and promote students to local industry. Recognize outstanding leaders and educators through the NTHS Hall of Fame. Encourage parental, family, and industry involvement in the educational process. n n Foster self-esteem, pride, responsibility, and community involvement in students. Enhance partnerships with HOSA, SkillsUSA, BPA, DECA, FCCLA, and FBLA/PBL. NTHS helps members to: n n n n n n n Seek postsecondary education by awarding over $260,000 in scholarships annually. Position themselves ahead of competition in today’s highly competitive workforce. Earn recognition for superior achievement in career and technical fields. Build career portfolios with professional letters of recommendation. Connect to global career and technical education networks. Discover opportunities with leading business and industry. Serve in leadership roles in communities and industries. February was “Love the Bus” Month February 12-16 was School Bus Driver Appreciation Week Rowan-Salisbury students love their school bus drivers! Rowan-Salisbury parents & staff appreciate school bus drivers! We all LOVE and APPRECIATE those that drive our school buses – transporting our children safely to school and back home each day. This was not only an opportunity to say thanks, but it was a great opportunity for all of us to help promote bus safety to all our students. Tim Beck, RSS Transportation Director says that, “Even though we transport roughly half of our student population daily, Transportation touches every student’s life during a school year through school sponsored n n n n Field trips during the school day Athletic events after school Band and FFA competitions Among other school events Transportation is a vital part of each student’s educational experience.
