The Annual Sam Moir Christmas Tournament
The 45th Annual Sam Moir Christmas Tournament , sponsored by Dale ’ s Sporting Goods , took place at Catawba College in December during the winter break . All Rowan-Salisbury traditional high schools participated in the girls ' and boys ' tournament , along with teams from Mooresville and Davie County high schools . Action started each morning at 9:00 and ran continuously through the day until the last buzzer sounded around 9:30 each evening .
In the girls ’ bracket , the number one seeded Salisbury defeated second-seeded Jesse Carson in the championship game by the score of 73-60 . It was Salisbury ’ s 11th Sam Moir championship and Coach Lakia Brice ’ s first in her four years as head coach . Senior Tyzarea Alexander of Salisbury was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the tournament .
For the boys , West Rowan defeated Jesse Carson 87-77 in the championship game . This was the 12th Sam Moir championship for West Rowan and the sixth championship for Coach Mike Gurley . It was 6 ’ 8 ” junior center Caleb Mauldin that won the Most Valuable Player trophy for the winning Falcons .
All in all , the tournament was well-attended by fans from all of the schools , making for three days of action-packed and fast-paced high school basketball .

McDowell started her career at the Salisbury Post , where she covered education in Rowan County . She went on to work in communications and marketing at the University of NC at Greensboro .
“ One of the greatest privileges of my career has been sharing the Rowan-Salisbury School System ’ s story with the community , and I ’ m excited to continue sharing our story with a new audience – prospective employees ,” McDowell said .
With her background in communications and marketing , McDowell brings fresh ideas to promote the district and spread the word about career opportunities at the district ’ s 35 schools . She ’ s established a presence on social media , is expanding the search for lateral-entry teachers and is planning a district-wide job fair in March . McDowell will hit the road this spring and visit with students from more than a dozen colleges and universities at career fairs across the state and the East Coast .
