ANTHONY JOHNSON
2017 Southwest Regional Teacher Of The Year
Fantastic News ! Isenberg Elementary School teacher Anthony Johnson has been named the 2017 Southwest Regional Teacher of the Year .
“ This honor is well-deserved , and I am thrilled for Mr . Johnson ,” said Superintendent Dr . Lynn Moody . “ He has established a unique educational environment for students to learn and grow each and every day .”
The announcement was made during a surprise assembly at Isenberg conducted by Principal Marvin Moore . The current NC Teacher of the Year , Bobbie Cavnar , made the presentation to Johnson .
Johnson has taught elementary and middle school for the last 14 years – 13 of which have been at Rowan-Salisbury Schools . He currently teaches fourth and fifth grade science and social studies , and uses technology to create an innovative and engaging learning experience for each student . His classroom , known as “ Johnsonville ,” is home to an ongoing , real-world simulation of adulthood , where students work , create and learn about personal finance and entrepreneurial skills .
Johnson is also the founder and director of the Salisbury Mini Funk Factory Marching Band , a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve test scores by engaging at-risk students through music and performance .
“ One of Mr . Johnson ’ s major strengths is his passion to reach at-risk students and lead them to making better choices and to finding pathways for success by reaching their potential ,” Moody said .
That passion is fueled by Johnson ’ s unconventional journey to the classroom . After failing four grades and dropping out of high school at the age of 16 , Johnson earned his GED and moved from job to job for nearly a decade before enrolling at Livingstone College . He graduated in 2003 with a degree in elementary education and a mission to change students ’ educational experience .
“ My goal is to teach with enthusiasm and give my students different learning experiences from my own in grade school ,” Johnson said .
In addition to District Teacher of the Year , Johnson has been named an Apple Distinguished Educator . He recently traveled to New York to create a TED-Ed Innovative Project and has been asked to speak at a number of
conferences and events , including ISTE and NCTIES .
Johnson is one of nine Regional Teachers of the Year , and he will now move on to the statewide competition . A winner will be announced in April or May . lARGEST TUBING PARK IN THE SOUTH
