State Superintendent Dr. June Atkinson Visits the Rowan Salisbury Schools State Board of Education Chair William Cobey and Representative Harry Warren Along with State Board of Education Chair William Cobey and NC Representative Harry Warren, Dr. June Atkinson had the pleasure of spending an afternoon in September learning about the innovative teaching and learning initiatives that the RowanSalisbury School System is currently implementing to keep our students engaged and eager to learn in many unique non-traditional classroom settings. Our special visitors learned firsthand about the amazing learning environments in our schools. Rowan-Salisbury is fortunate to be the home of Horizons Unlimited, one of three supplementary education centers in the entire United States. Horizons offers high quality STEM “hands on” programs to students that provide career development experiences to prepare them for the future workforce. Horizons serves over 25,000 students each year in both Rowan and Davie counties. With the MSP Grant, educators are provided professional development and an extensive inventory of STEM equipment and materials for classroom use through Horizons. Approximately 200 teachers received 140 hours of training each over a 3-year period. Dr. Atkinson enjoyed visiting the Rowan-Salisbury STEM mobile classroom that travels around the district’s elementary schools offering interactive STEM curriculum to students. The “STEM on wheels” classroom visits all elementary students in the district so they can have the opportunity to learn in an engaging and fun environment. Focused on STEM initiatives, RowanSalisbury is creating a STEM Academy District, within the district, comprised of two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school and supported by Horizons Unlimited. This STEM district offers up-to-date technology, lego robotics and forensic science, to name a few areas that support learning through the Common Core Curriculum. It became obvious to our visitors why Rowan-Salisbury has received national awards for their leadership and advancements in teaching and leaning through technology.
