Woodleaf Elementary Learns About “Mummies!”
South Rowan High School’s
Public Service Academy (Fire
Academy) students had an
opportunity for first-hand
experience in working with a
local fire department. Students
experienced climbing an 85foot ladder using equipment
and supervision from the Locke
Fire Department and officials.
This is a great Partnership
with just one of the many Fire
Departments within the county
as they help students at South
Rowan High School.
Who is buried in
King Tut’s tomb? The
Woodleaf Elementary
School community can
tell you! They have just
completed a school-wide
book study of Mummies
in the Morning, a Magic
Tree House book by
Mary Pope Osborne.
The entire school
was involved as each
class was given a top
secret package by
a special agent that
contained a secret
word, the Mummies in
the Morning book, and
instructions for researching and creating artifacts to be displayed in
our Ancient Egypt Museum. Even our Principal, Mrs. Susan Herrington,
and Assistant Principal, Mrs. Linda Shelton, completed a science
experiment by mummifying a real chicken...complete with daily
observations and scientific documentation! The staff set a goal to
personally read 18000 minutes in 15 days and will “mummify” the
principals because of successfully meeting their goal.
The parents were invited to the Ancient Egypt Museum that
remained open during the Fall Reading Oasis Book Fair.
Football Frenzy with Carson High School & Koontz Elementary
This year, Koontz Elementary established positive behavior goals based on being SAFE,
RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, being a PROBLEM-SOLVER. Students that met the guidelines
were invited to the “Football Frenzy” event. Two student representatives were chosen to
represent each class based on their
positive behavior for the past 6-7 weeks.
Students could also be nominated based
on their positive behavior to be school
cheerleaders and/or promoting fitness in
the school. All classes and their teachers
were spectators if they met the positive
behavior benchmarks.
Carson High’s football team, with their
Head Coach Pinyan, interacted with the
young Koontz Panthers. Carson demonstrated their flexibility
and attention in making sure the Koontz Panthers received
a positive and realistic outlook on what it means to be a
student-athlete.
Awesome to see Carson High putting a new meaning to
the K-12 continuum and collaborating with the young Koontz
Panthers.
