Message from Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody
Extraordinary Education Every day (E3)
THIS IS OUR YEAR!

Happy New Year! What makes
celebrating this New Year so
special is that it gives us an
opportunity to reflect on the
first half of our school year
as we forge ahead into the
second half of the school year.
One thing for sure is that time
has flown by with much being
accomplished every day in our
schools for our children.

This new year brings a challenge
for us as the state plans to
release, for the first time,
performance grades using an A-F scale that largely emphasize test
scores. While this is one way to measure how schools are performing,
we all know that our schools, our children, are so much more than
test scores. We will continue to host scheduled school visits to
welcome parents, community and elected leaders for school tours led
by students. Who better than our children to talk about teaching and
learning in our extraordinary schools!
This is an exciting year as we began a new direction with the focus
on Reading and Student Engagement as identified in our new

Strategic Plan. It takes lots of manpower, commitment and energy
to make these focused changes in direction; but our staff is ready,
our community partners and elected leaders are ready, and most
importantly you, as parents, continue to work with us in providing
the best education for our children. Schools are joining forces as we
implement a unified literacy framework to guide students in learning
lifelong reading skills. Combine this focus with putting laptops and
iPads into the hands of students in grades 3-12, equipping them
with a learning tool that opens up the world as a resource at their
fingertips. Our wonderful faith-based community and business
partners are opening afterschool “hotspot” centers with WiFi
availability for students
to continue their learning
beyond the school hours.
I believe it is a great time
to be in public education
and to be a student in the
Rowan-Salisbury Schools.

Northwest FBLA Regional Competition
East Rowan High School hosted the Northwest FBLA Regional Competition
in December. Over 200 were in attendance including 176 students and FBLA
advisers from 13 different middle and high schools in the Northwest Region.
There were 25 judges from the professional community representing many
different careers in Rowan County. The finalists listed are from East Rowan
and will be eligible to compete in the FBLA State Conference on in April.
