Gaston County Schools Good News Penny War Challenge and collected $1,313.04 for students, families, and staff members at Craven Early College High School in New Bern. The fundraiser was an effort by the school to help people affected by Hurricane Florence. n Grier Middle student Shandreona Rainey encouraged people to purchase tickets for barbecue plates with the idea of donating the food to people who are homeless. She sold 52 tickets and delivered the plates to provide meals for people in need. n Grier Middle School was awarded a T.E.A.M. Foundation grant in the amount of $2,500. GASTON COUNTY FAMILY YMCA n Hawks Nest STEAM Academy students created more than 100 unique games as they participated in the Global Cardboard Challenge. n Troy Davis of Hunter Huss High School was named one of the Charlotte area’s top preseason football players in the High School Football Extra’s Big 22 program. n Lingerfeldt Elementary observed Hispanic Heritage Month with a program that had students and families to build projects with materials provided by Home Depot. n Springfield Elementary received an American flag from Representative John Torbett. n Lowell Elementary celebrated World School Milk Day. Teachers planned different activities and fun lessons so students could learn about how milk is produced and why it is beneficial. The Southeast Dairy Association sponsored the event. n Students in Heather Wilson’s class at Mount Holly Middle School received supplies from Lowe’s Home Improvement to participate in the “Build Your Own Boat” Challenge. After building a boat, the students tested its durability in a rafting contest at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.
