Applications accepted for Hawks Nest STEAM Academy
New elementary magnet school is the first of its kind for Gaston County Schools
Gaston County Schools is
accepting applications for the
Hawks Nest STEAM Academy, a
new elementary school magnet
program that concentrates on
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
The Academy will be located at the current Hawks Nest
Intermediate School campus
on Robinwood Road in Gastonia. The STEAM magnet school
for elementary-age children is
the first of its kind in Gaston
County.
Now through May 13, parents may apply to have their
child attend Hawks Nest STEAM
Academy, which will open in
August. Students will be chosen through a lottery selection
process. Students who will be
in kindergarten, first grade,
second grade, third grade, or
fourth grade next school year
(2016-2017) are eligible to
apply. Students must reside in

Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker stated, “The new
Hawks Nest STEAM Academy will offer a comprehensive and innovative academic program as well as extracurricular activities associated
with the STEAM curriculum. Students will have opportunities to make
real-world connections through technology, engaging group activities,
hands-on learning, and endeavors inside and outside the classroom.
Most important, students will learn how science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics relate to everyday life.”
Parents may fill out the student application online by visiting the
Gaston County Schools website (www.gaston.k12.nc.us) and clicking
the “Hawks Nest STEAM Academy” quick link. The deadline to apply is
Friday, May 13 at 5:00 p.m.
The lottery to select the students who will attend the school will
be held on Friday, May 20 at 4:00 p.m. in the auditorium at Highland
School of Technology, 1600 North Morris Street, Gastonia.
