Junior Achievement program teaches elementary students about money and finance
Students at Lingerfeldt Elementary participated in ‘Junior
Achievement Day’ on Friday, December 8 and had the opportunity
to enjoy fun lessons and activities that focused on economics,
business, and personal finance. The event was presented by Junior
Achievement of the Central Carolinas and Firestone Fibers and Textiles
in partnership with Gaston County Schools.
“We had close to 30 volunteers teaching the Junior Achievement
curriculum to 420 students,” said program manager Hannah
Heidenreich. The curriculum focuses on entrepreneurship, financial
literacy, and workforce readiness.
Volunteers from the Gaston County Department of Health and
Human Services, City of Gastonia, Gaston Family Health Services,
Woodforest National Bank, Firestone, United Way of Gaston County,
Tabernacle Baptist Church, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and TPP
Vending took a break from their job to get in the classroom and help
students learn about the importance of managing money, making
good decisions, and thinking about the future.
Lingerfeldt principal Staci Bradley said, “This is our second year
for hosting Junior Achievement Day, and we are grateful for the
opportunity to have this program at our school so our students can
begin to learn about personal finance, money management, business,
and related topics.”
Woodforest Bank and Caputo’s Pizza of Cherryville provided
a pizza party for students as well as lunch for the teachers and
volunteers. Plans are in the works to hold a Junior Achievement Day at Sadler Elementary in March.

Ashbrook High School is getting new science lab equipment,
thanks to the efforts of students in the research methods
class. The students created a video for the LANXESS Factor
Manufacturing Day Video Contest and won third place in the
national competition that involved about 400 high schools. That
means Ashbrook will get $1,500 to purchase new equipment.
Additionally, Forestview High School finished in the top eight and
will receive $1,000.
