Child Nutrition Services & Universal Free Breakfast Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Child Nutrition Services provides high-quality meals for your child that are both nutritious and appealing at a reasonable cost. In June, the Board of Education approved universal free breakfast for all CMS students beginning with the 2013-14 school year. All students are allowed one free breakfast each school day during breakfast serving times. The award-winning department serves more than 29,000 breakfasts, nearly 80,000 lunches and 12,000 after-school snacks each day. CMS is currently accepting applications for free- and reducedprice lunch. Families whose children have special nutrition needs, including food allergies or diabetes, should fill out the diet order form. Breakfast is offered daily in all schools before the start of the school day at NO CHARGE to students. All students are allowed one breakfast each school day during breakfast serving times. A student breakfast consists of: Milk - 8 oz. Fruit - 1/2 cup Fruit Juice - 4 oz. Grain - 1 serving 2nd Grain or Meat/Meat Alternate - 1 serving Students may select three, four or five items--one of which must be at least 1/2 cup of fruit or 4 oz. of fruit juice.
