Student ambassadors for healthy living
Five Coulwood students attend Fuel Up to Play 60 Student Ambassador Summit
Five Coulwood STEM
Academy students and two
program advisors recently
represented CharlotteMecklenburg Schools at the
national Fuel Up to Play 60
Student Ambassador Summit
in Chicago. The summit was
a multi-day, intensive and fun
training for Fuel Up to Play
60’s ambassadors.
Inspired and led by
youth, Fuel Up to Play 60
empowers students to eat
healthy, be active and make
positive changes in their
schools and communities.
The program, created
in partnership with the
American Dairy Association Mideast and the NFL, in cooperation with USDA, is in more than 73,000 schools nationwide.
“The summit was amazing! I met great people, had fun and learned a lot,” said Brendon Battle, a rising ninth-grader at Phillip O. Berry Academy of
Technology.
Participants met NFL players and took part in physical-activity drills and other events. Panel d
iscussions, leadership sessions, team challenges, cooking
challenges and a flag football tournament were also part of the summit.
“Attending the summit makes me feel confident I can show others how to live a healthy lifestyle,” said Matt Cooper, a rising ninth-grader at Hopewell High
School.
Michaleh Snider, Coulwood’s physical education instructor, said the students gained useful information, learned new skills and made new friends.
“They spent one morning interviewing college athletes and coaches to find out what it is like to be a college athlete,” said Snider. “They spent time with
students from across the country, had to join in teams with people they didn’t know and participated in various work sessions.”
The students will take what they’ve learned back to their schools in the fall so they can continue to promote healthy living.
