A long history, a fresh start Bain Elementary celebrates a new building Kelli Drye comes from a three-generation family at Bain Elementary. Drye, an academic facilitator, attended Bain and has been working at the school for 20 years. Her mother taught there for 24 years and now Drye’s daughter is a Bain Bobcat as well. “It is special to have my daughter attend school here,” said Drye. “I have so many great memories at this school.” For nearly 125 years, Bain Elementary has been a fixture in the Mint Hill community. Founded in 1889 by John Bain, the school has grown to serve more than 1,000 students today. On Sept. 26, the school dedicated a new building built with funds from the 2007 bonds. The two-story building has 37 classrooms and additional space for growth. “We are not starting over, but continuing the tradition of excellence,” said Principal John LeGrand. LeGrand recognized former and current students and staff who attended the dedication. He acknowledged Bain’s history and thanked the attendees for their service and commitment to the students. “When I walked up and saw the building, I thought to myself this is amazing,” said Marilyn McClain, who taught at Bain Elementary for 31 years. The dedication program included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, musical selection from third graders, remarks from Superintendent Heath Morrison, Principal LeGrand and Board of Education member Amelia Stinson-Wesley. “Bain Elementary School is truly a community school,” said StinsonWesley. “With the technology in this building, the talent and passion of our teachers and with the drive and dedication of our students, we are ready for the next generation of Bain Bobcats.” ® Education at Bain Elementary expands through many generations in the Mint Hill community. Several current staff members attended the school and now Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have children enrolled there.
