Olympic team makes finals of tech competition
A n Olympic High partnership
program was again named a
finalist for the Blue Diamond
Best in Charlotte Technology
Award in the Community
Outreach category.
Olympic’s team was
comprised of students and
partners from Lenovo,
NAF and AvidXchange,
and was designed to
cultivate creativity and
tech talent. Students
developed essential skills
while building a mobile app
designed to solve problems important to youth. The team represented
the portion of the school’s computer skills development program that is
delivered outside the classroom – after school and during the summer –
and is dependent on business partnerships.
Olympic partnership programs have won Best in Charlotte Technology
Awards three times in the past four years. The award is given annually
by the Charlotte Area Technology Collaborative, which is a coalition of
Charlotte’s largest employers, as well as smaller entrepreneurial firms
whose operations rely on a competent and capable computer science/
IT workforce. The Community Outreach award is for demonstrated value
through a volunteer, nonfee-based community support outreach program.
HOSA students take top awards at state conference
C harlotte-Mecklenburg Schools won eight awards – five of them first-
place – at the North Carolina State HOSA Leadership Conference,
which was held at the Charlotte Convention Center March 7-9.
In all, 134 students from nine CMS high
schools participated: Ardrey Kell, Butler, East
Mecklenburg, Hawthorne Academy of Health
Sciences, Mallard Creek, Myers Park, Olympic,
South Mecklenburg and Hough.
Individual first-place awards went to:
n Samhita Vellala, Ardrey Kell, Knowledge Test:
Human Growth and Development
n Atheena Panama, Olympic, Medical Spelling
n Aditi Wamorkar, Mallard Creek, Extemporaneous Health Poster
n Mackenzie Bookamer, Mallard Creek, Extemporaneous Writing
The senior team from South Mecklenburg won first place in the HOSA
Bowl. Team members were Eyram Bossiade, Katie Jackson, Anuj
Kalia and Chloe Larson.
The district also won two second-place awards and one third-place
award in the Individual Category. Second-place awards went to East
Mecklenburg students Sarvesh Bandaru, Knowledge Test: Behavioral
Health, and Tigest Aboye, Biomedical Laboratory Science. Ardrey
Kell’s Sam Bundy won third-place in Clinical Nursing.
HOSA is an international student organization formed to promote
career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the
delivery of quality health care to all people.
