Eight CMS teachers win innovation grants Charlotte Hornets , Lowe ’ s , FOX Sports Southeast provide funds ​
​Eight CMS educators received a total of $ 33,000 Teacher Innovation Fund grants to support dynamic and unique ideas .
“ We are grateful for these organizations ’ commitment to encouraging teacher creativity and increasing student achievement in CMS ,” said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Ann Clark . “ They continue to be amazing partners for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools . Every program supported by the Teacher Innovation Fund opens new doors for our teachers and students .”
The Charlotte Hornets , Lowe ’ s and FOX Sports Southeast presented the grants during a ceremony at halftime of the Hornets game against the Orlando Magic on April 13 . The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teachers receiving grants are : Charlotte Fletcher , experiential science curriculum assistant at Park Road Montessori , received $ 5,000 to fund the school ’ s pond reconstruction and vegetation project to create a safe and interactive outdoor learning environment for science students .
Liliana Forero and Cynthia Hira , professional development facilitator and elementary art teacher at Collinswood Language Academy , received $ 4,000 to fund the anti-bullying “ Faces of Diversity ” program . The week-long project is designed to promote diversity and multicultural awareness as well as a mosaic mural of student thumbprints .
Brooke Fulton , theater arts teacher at University Park Creative Arts , received $ 5,000 to fund a flexible performance stage and seating that can be used in a variety of spaces on and off campus .
Toni Hall , Career and Technical Education business teacher at Rocky River High , received $ 5,000 to fund the implementation of a four-week , after-school information technology boot camp program . It is designed to develop basic technology concepts in software development and information technology through eight Microsoft IT Academy training sessions .
Wendy Neisler , pre-kindergarten teacher at Berryhill School , received
$ 5,000 to fund an early literacy lending library for families in the Berryhill School area . The library will provide bilingual books , interactive games and toys that support critical brain development in children ages birth to three . Neisler will also host weekly family story times and other seminars .
Barry Sherman , social worker at Bruns Academy , received $ 5,000 to fund a project titled Me . Us . You . The project will unite students from Bruns Academy and Providence Day School for multi-session experiences and diversity workshops . It is intended to break through the isolated learning experiences of each group .
Elijah Watson , Career and Technical Education business teacher at Ranson IB Middle School , received $ 4,000 to fund the Ranson IB Middle School Business Plan Project . Students will create a business plan tied to their interests to be entered for the Ranson Shark Tank competition .
Through the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools Foundation , the Hornets , Lowe ’ s and FOX Sports Southeast will award a total of $ 250,000 in Teacher Innovation Fund grants to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teachers from 2014-2016 . This is the fourth cycle of grants distributed . The three organizations have previously awarded a total of $ 117,900 to 31 teachers .
