CMS teachers at the top of their game National Board Certified Teachers honored for their hard work Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education members and district administrators attended a celebration on February 17 to honor a group of exceptional teachers. Ninety-one teachers were honored for achieving National Board Certification. Thirty four teachers were certified for the first time and 57 teachers renewed their certification. National Board Certification is a symbol of professional teaching excellence, recognizing teachers who are accomplished and committed to education for all students. The National Board website states: National Board Certification is the most rigorous, coveted and respected professional certification available in education. Earning National Board Certification helps to enhance student learning and demonstrate high level of knowledge, skills, professionalism and commitment as reflected in the five core proposition of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Those standards are: n Teachers are committed to students and their learning. n Teachers know the subject they teach and how to teach those standards to students. n Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. n Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from their experience. Teachers are members of learning communities. Two teachers honored were Kevin Eudy, a social studies teacher at Olympic High who received the certification for the first time, and Christine Tymes, a social studies teacher at McClintock who renewed her certification. Eudy has been teaching social studies for eight years. The push to become a National Board Certified Teacher came from the inspiration of teachers who had already been through the process and their belief that he could do it. “I was meeting with other teachers whom I respected that had been through the process. They believed that I could and should do it.” Eudy said, “It was the inspiration from those past teachers that I respected that got me to start the certification process.” The process allowed Ց
