More than just a one and two zero
Elon Park students donate approximately 1,500 items to four local charities
Teaching and learning
can sometimes be a
matter of seizing a good
opportunity. Elon Park
grabbed such an opportunity
on Feb. 7, the 100th-day of
school. Leading up to the
100th-day, classes in all
grades decided what they
wanted to do to celebrate
the special day. Charity
was at the top of the list for
many classes.
Classes which chose
charities collected
approximately 1,500 items
to donate to four local
charities – Ronald McDonald
House of Charlotte, A Child’s
Place, Humane Society of
Charlotte and Levine Children’s Hospital.
“I liked helping other kids,” said fourth-grader Chase Lowe. “It meant a
lot to do this and it was fun. If I was one of those kids I‘d like getting these
things.”
The Eagle Committee at the school suggested seizing the 100 opportunity.
The committee is tasked with aligning activities with Elon Park’s vision
statement, which includes exhibiting school pride. The 100th-day activity was
created to motivate students in classes to come together and build community
while working collaboratively to reach their class goal. Every class at the
school participated and school pride was evident throughout the school.
Donations to the
Humane Society of
Charlotte included pet
food, toys, beds and
sweaters. Classes that
donated to Levine Children’s
Hospital made cards of
encouragement and jewelry
for the patients. A Child’s
Place received clothing,
food and toiletries to help
homeless children. Sodacan pull tops, activity books,
food and overnight supplies
were donated for families
at the Ronald McDonald
House.
Laura-Nelle Parnell,
development and
communications manager
for RonaldMcDonald House, is delighted by Elon Park’s gifts.
“This means a lot to our families,” Parnell said. “I hope these students
know the impact they are making on these families.”
Other classroom choices ranged from reading 100 pages to recycling
plastic water bottles to fifth graders making a list of 100 reasons they don’t
want to leave Elon Park next year.
“It was really exciting to see every class achieve their goal, whether it
was to give to a charity or an academic goal,” said Melissa Toner, Elon Park’s
library media specialist and 100th-day organizer.
“EAGLE TaeKwonDo is the best thing I ever did for my kids,”
