CNP Director Named to State Commission Frank Fiorella, director of the CCS Child Nutrition Program, has been named to the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. The Commission encourages community service and volunteerism as a means of problem solving across the state and provides valuable support for the state’s growing force of volunteers who impact the lives of others and help meet critical community needs. Through its work, the Commission strives to enhance the quality of life for North Carolinians through volunteer and community service. The Commission administers two federal programs in North Carolina: AmeriCorps State and Citizen Corps and the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award Program. The Commission also is a collaborative partner in the N.C. Mentoring Partnership. Fiorella joined Cabarrus County Schools in July 2012. Prior to that, he worked in Montgomery County Schools as child nutrition director. He also worked as a supervisor for Denver Public Schools (Colorado) and Milpitas and Oakland Unified School Districts (California), as well as Paterson Public Schools (New Jersey). He has a bachelor’s degree in Food Service Management from Johnson & Wales University and is a certified school nutrition specialist (SNS) and a member of the School Nutrition Association. We congratulate him on his appointment. Furr Elementary Wins Spirit Rock Contest © Disney Congratulations to Carl A. Furr Elementary School – winners of the Carolina Panthers and the Allen Tate Company Panthers Spirit Rock Art contest! The spirit rock was painted after Kathy Braswell, Furr Elementary art teacher, brainstormed ideas with students in the Art Club and several other classes. The final design featured the Charlotte skyline painted above a panther face. The school’s art department will receive a $1,000 grant for its first place win. This is the fifth year for the spirit rock contest. Entries were judged by a community panel. The winning designs were featured on the PantherVision screen at Panthers Stadium in December, as well as in Roar Magazine and a slideshow on the Panthers website. Other schools that received grants were: 1st Runners Up -- $500 grants – Piedmont High School, Rea View Elementary School, South Mecklenburg High School & Union Academy 2nd Runners Up -- $400 grants – East Gaston Middle School, Landsdowne Elementary School, Northeast Middle School & York Comprehensive High School.
