Irvin Elementary School for receiving Champions Grants from the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and Lowe’s Toolbox for Education. The grants were announced on Nov. 20th at Garinger High School in Charlotte. Garinger is one of five schools in the Charlotte area to receive a Champions Grant. Students and staff from Rocky River Elementary and W.M. Irvin Elementary attended the program as Jimmie Johnson and his wife Chandra announced the recipients on behalf of the Foundation and program partner Lowe’s. “Chani and I are very excited for this year’s projects to get off the ground,” said Jimmie Johnson. “The Champions Grant program is great because we get to see the impact of the projects from start to finish. We appreciate being able to play a role in the education of students in our hometowns and here in Charlotte.” Rocky River received $49,840 to fund a robotics program at the school. W.M. Irvin received $40,316 to fund a track on school grounds that will include workout stations. Nearly $3.7 million has been contributed through the Champions Grant program since 2009. Mount Pleasant KIDS:PLUS Wins Contest Congratulations to the students and staff of Mount Pleasant Elementary School’s KIDS:PLUS! They won the Lights on Afterschool Photo Contest sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance and Bright House Networks. Their winning entry earned them a $1,000 prize. Mount Pleasant KIDS:PLUS organized a Glow in the Dark Festival, which was held in October. Their winning photo was taken at the festival. The winner was determined through online voting on social media over a 14-day period. The prize money will be used to purchase five Kindle Fire 6 HD tablets for students to use during homework time while they are in KIDS:PLUS after school and on
